The coffee

Horizonte goes Brazilian! For a while now, Christoph – the founder of Horizonte Coffee – has been under some pressure from his Brazilian wife Andrea to offer beans from her home country, which happens to be the biggest producer of coffee in the world.

We took our time though, because we wanted to find small farmers (in the Brazilian context) which produces beans of extraordinary quality and with a taste profile that is very “casual” – in other words, a taste that any coffee lover might enjoy at any given time.

With our Casual beans we discovered a super-creamy, low acidity coffee with delicious milk chocolate-nut flavours with fruity undertones like grapes. No crazy flavours – just a simple, very pleasurable, easy-drinking experience.

The beans are machine or hand-picked blends from honey-processed fazenda lots, which are dried on terraces or also by machine (depending on the weather). Before the beans are packed into bags, they are inspected again for defective/bad beans and sorted out.

The producer

Luiz (founder and CEO of Capricornio) is a visionary agronomist and farmer who combines collaboration with nature with hypermodern (myco)biological and scientific knowledge. Above all, he believes in sharing this knowledge with the world to create equal opportunities for coffee farmers everywhere. In the Paraná and São Paulo region, where Luiz Capricornio and his partner farmers farm, the soil here is alive in contrast to the usual monocultures.

Notable: Capricornio greatly reduces the ecological footprint of all their 20 partner farmers: they help them create water-efficient mills, implement waste water treatment technologies, and apply systems thinking to optimise all coffee processes and reduce CO2 output. They also stimulate the use of organic fertilisers, energy-efficient machinery and irrigation systems.
